BLOOD CIRCULATION
Anatomic model of the blood circulation of an adult human body.
The blood circulates in the organisme through the systemic circulation: a network carrying the oxygenated blood from the heart to the whole body, via the arteries (in red), and then bringing the deoxygenated blood back to the heart via the veins (in royal blue).
The oxygenated blood is propeled by the heart to the whole body through the aorta, which divides first into carotid arteries to irriguate the neck and head structures, then into subclavian arteries towards the arms, thoracic and abdominal aortas, and at last into iliac arteries for the lower limbs. Additional branchings allow to carry the arterial blood in all tissues of the body.
The deoxygenated blood is drained through a vein network (in royal blue) usually called like the arteries. It is brought back to the heart through the superior, for the neck and head structures, and the inferior vena cavas for the reminder of the body.
