Anatomy of the upper airways. The location of the tonsils is represented : palatine tonsils at the back of the palate, lingual tonsil at the basis of the tongue, pharyngeal tonsils at the level of the rhinopharynx. A tonsillitis is an inflammation of the palatine tonsils ; the vegetations (or adenoides) correspond to a hypertrophy of the pharyngeal tonsils.
